The MBA Proudly Introduces Its Intellectual Property / Entertainment Law Section

The Memphis area boasts a bevy of highly talented and accomplished practitioners in the entertainment and intellectual property law fields and multiple businesses and artists constantly needing counsel in these highly complex areas. As a result, the MBA has instituted the Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Section.
A very strong and dedicated initial slate of officers and directors led by Bill Parks of Wyatt Tarrant & Combs is ready to promote not just the new IP/Entertainment Law Section throughout the MBA, but also to provide the Memphis business community and the Mid-South region with a legal education resource, a dedicated pro-bono group, and experts in these subject areas.

Summer Law Intern Program Needs You!

Over 50 law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments have committed to taking an intern through the Summer Law Intern Program. However, over 20 students are on a “wait list”, hoping that we can find additional places for them. The program runs from June 7 to July 2; an orientation will be held for the interns and workplaces on Friday, June 5. Interns are to work a total of 60 hours over that four-week period. While the interns can do clerical work, the goal of the program is to give them a taste of the “real world” practice of law. Participating workplaces are asked to take them to court, sit in on depositions, watch a business negotiation, etc. Group activities on Friday will introduce them to other aspects of the practice of law.
Upon successful completion of the internship, the interns receive a $500 stipend, which is paid by the workplace. However, some sponsorship money is available for firms and agencies that can take an intern, but can’t pay the stipend. If you are interested in participating in the Summer Law Intern Program, please contact MBA Executive Director Anne Fritz at 527.3573 or

One-Stop Shop for Pro Bono & Volunteer Opportunities

The Memphis Bar Association today introduced, a portion of its website dedicated to helping local attorneys find ways to achieve the 50 pro bono hours encouraged by the Tennessee Supreme Court. The site lists schedules and details regarding popular pro bono programs such as the Saturday Legal Clinic and Attorney for the Day as well as information about general community service opportunities.
The new website is the other half of, a website established in 2008 to provide legal assistance to the people of Memphis & Shelby County. Among the features of the legalhelp site are a free attorney search by area of practice or zip code, answers to frequently asked legal questions, tips on how to be a responsible client, and a list of things to know before you go to court. We encourage you and your support staff to share this web address with those in need of legal help who you are unable to assist.

Red Cross Blood Drive, May 19-20

A Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at the MBA office (80 Monroe Avenue, Suite 220) on May 19th and 20th from 10 am until 3:30 pm. To sign up, contact Mary Lynes at . If you are asking yourself, "Why Donate?", then you need to have a talk with MBA member Sam Cole, Jr. Sam has donated 18 gallons of blood in his lifetime. It all started when Sam was in the Air Force stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico. When an Air Force pilot crashed in the mountains surrounding the base, the pilot's life was saved by blood donations given by other Air Force members on the base that day. After the pilot survived to tell his story, he returned to the base to thank the doctors, nurses and blood donors who helped him. While the very talented medical team played an important role in saving the pilot's life, they could not have done it without the ready blood supply donated by those on the base that day. It was that fact that kept Sam coming back to donate blood over the years. Sam later learned that because his blood is type CMV Negative, his platelets are safe for infants and small children who are fighting leukemia and other cancers. What a great reason to donate! You never know whose life you may touch. For more details about what your blood donation means and what the process is for blood donation, visit
