In-House Lawyers Must Be Registered with Law Examiners by June 30th

Effective January 1, 2010, the Tennessee Supreme Court created a new, easier option for in-house lawyers licensed in other states to practice as in-house lawyers in Tennessee without the burden of full Tennessee bar admission. Now lawyers admitted only in other states may work as in-house lawyers in Tennessee, if they merely file a short-form application, pay a fee, and undergo a background check. No bar exam required.
But what about those Tennessee in-house lawyers not in compliance now with the law because they have been practicing here, but not admitted? The Supreme Court approved an “amnesty” period through Wednesday, June 30, 2010, for out-of-compliance lawyers to register as in-house lawyers and avoid questions about past noncompliance.

Leadership Forum Applications Due July 31

Applications are now available for the MBA’s award-winning Leadership Forum at www.memphisbar.org/leadershipforum or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3573; afritz@memphisbar.org). The deadline to apply is July 31.
The Leadership Forum’s mission is to develop the leadership skills of young attorneys (between the 3rd and 8th year of practice); empower young attorneys to use their skills to make greater contributions to the Memphis community and the legal profession; model and practice the highest standards of the legal profession; and build relationships among attorneys of diverse backgrounds. The Forum accomplishes this mission through a full-day retreat on October 1, where leadership concepts are introduced, followed by monthly meetings on topics such as the attorney’s role in the greater community, work/life balance, and communication skills. The monthly sessions are held at various community organizations around the community, such as MIFA, the National Civil Rights Museum, and Bridges, to acquaint the participants with their services and programs. In addition, the participants are assigned to small groups to develop and implement a community service project, which is showcased at the graduation ceremony in May.
Tuition is $550, which covers more than a full year of CLE credit. A limited number of scholarships are available. Now in its 7th year, the Leadership Forum has helped hone the leadership skills of over 130 attorneys. The forum received an E. Smythe Gambrell Award from the ABA in 2006; the award recognizes outstanding achievement in the design and implementation of a model professionalism program.
