Judicial Qualification Poll Results Are In

The Memphis Bar Association has released the results of its Judicial Qualification Poll for the candidates in contested judicial elections on the August 5th ballot. The poll was sent to nearly 3,000 attorneys in Shelby County, including both members and non-members of the MBA. 795 attorneys responded.
The poll asked attorneys to select the one candidate in each race whom they felt was best qualified to serve as judge. If an attorney did not know the candidates’ qualifications or had no opinion, he/she was instructed to mark “no opinion.”
The Memphis Bar Association has conducted a poll of candidates in contested judicial elections for more than 20 years, in the belief that local attorneys are in the best position to know a candidate’s qualifications and that the MBA has a responsibility to inform the voting public of attorneys’ opinions about the candidates.

Memphis Bar Foundation Grant Applications Due July 30

The Memphis Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Memphis Bar Association, is seeking grant applications from 501(c)(3) organizations for law-related programs or projects. Grant applications are available at www.memphisbar.org (go to the Bar Foundation page under “About the MBA”) or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3573; afritz@memphisbar.org ). The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on July 30, 2010.
The MBF funds programs and projects that furthers its objectives and purposes, which are to advocate and support public awareness of the legal profession; promote social justice; promote legal education; and recognize professionalism among members of the Bar. The MBF Grants Committee will initially review the applications; the full MBF Board will determine the grants to be funded and the amount of funding.

Leadership Forum Applications Due July 31

Applications are now available for the MBA’s award-winning Leadership Forum at www.memphisbar.org/leadershipforum or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3573; afritz@memphisbar.org). The deadline to apply is July 31.
The Leadership Forum’s mission is to develop the leadership skills of young attorneys (between the 3rd and 8th year of practice); empower young attorneys to use their skills to make greater contributions to the Memphis community and the legal profession; model and practice the highest standards of the legal profession; and build relationships among attorneys of diverse backgrounds. The Forum accomplishes this mission through a full-day retreat on October 1, where leadership concepts are introduced, followed by monthly meetings on topics such as the attorney’s role in the greater community, work/life balance, and communication skills. The monthly sessions are held at various community organizations around the community, such as MIFA, the National Civil Rights Museum, and Bridges, to acquaint the participants with their services and programs. In addition, the participants are assigned to small groups to develop and implement a community service project, which is showcased at the graduation ceremony in May.
Tuition is $550, which covers more than a full year of CLE credit. A limited number of scholarships are available. Now in its 7th year, the Leadership Forum has helped hone the leadership skills of over 130 attorneys. The forum received an E. Smythe Gambrell Award from the ABA in 2006; the award recognizes outstanding achievement in the design and implementation of a model professionalism program.
