Want 50% Off Bench Bar Registration?

Complete the 2011 Pro Bono Survey by Friday, February 4, 2011, and be entered in a drawing to win 50% off registration to the Bench Bar Conference, May 4-8 in Destin, Florida. Bench Bar registration is valued up to $350 for MBA members and $500 for non-MBA members. Go to  www.surveymonkey.com/s/probono2011 to take the survey. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and your responses are anonymous unless you choose to provide us with your personal information at the end of the survey. You must provide your personal information in order to be entered in the drawing.
Developed by the MBA Access to Justice Committee, the goal of the survey is to gain insight into the attorney perspective on pro bono and the programs currently in place. The Access to Justice Committee not only wants to make it easier for attorneys to obtain the 50 hours of pro bono encouraged by the Tennessee Supreme Court but also to provide legal assistance to as many people in need as possible.  We know that many of you already meet and exceed this hourly goal in various capacities in our community. Please share your experiences and opinions with us in this brief survey. Thank you.

Volunteer at High School Mock Trial, Feb. 15-23

The Young Lawyers Division of the MBA is again looking forward to hosting the 2011 Local High School Mock Trial Competition at the Shelby County Courthouse. The YLD public service committee with the help of local White Station High School mock trial coach, Buddy Bernstein, has made an effort over the past year to encourage more schools to participate in the competition and to pair them up with local attorney coaches to teach them about legal issues and trial techniques. This effort has paid off with this year’s competition having 28 teams competing from 20 local high schools. This is a total of 6 more schools from last year’s competition, which also includes more public schools than in years past. More teams will also allow for more teams to advance to state competition than last year.
However, with more schools in the competition, the YLD needs more help from local attorneys than in years past! So please sign up today to judge a round of the competition by contacting Abby Webb, at awebb@shuttleworthwilliams.com, 901-328-8223. The YLD needs volunteer judges on the following dates: February 15, 16, 17, 22 and 23. Feel free to volunteer for more than one evening if you have time. While judging a round is a very interesting and fun way to spend some down time away from work, it is also a very worthwhile and great way to give back to your community. Mock trial is a excellent program that not only gives many high school students their first glance at the legal community, but also helps them develop skills and confidence making them successful in whatever profession they chose.
