High School Mock Trial Championship Tonight

Tonight, St. Mary's Episcopal School will face off against the Gray team from White Station High School in the Championship Round of the 2011 High School Mock Trial Tournament. St. George's Independent School will go up against the Green team from White Station High School in the Consolation Finals. The top three teams will advance to the State High School Mock Trial Tournament March 11-12 in Nashville. Tonight's competition will be held at 6 pm at the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Avenue.

Our Condolences—Services Saturday for Jeb Blount

Attorney James E. “Jeb” Blount III, 68, died Tuesday. Jeb was a lifelong resident of Shelby County and a proud graduate of Memphis University School, Rhodes College, and University of Memphis School of Law. He also served honorably in the Air National Guard. Jeb was a MBA member for over 40 years and was proud to call himself a trial lawyer. His family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, on Saturday, February 26, 2011. His family requests that any memorials be sent to the American Heart Association or Emmanuel United Methodist Church. YLD Happy Hour and Basketball Draft, February 25th

On February 25th, the YLD will host its Basketball League Draft in conjunction with a YLD Happy Hour at The Flying Saucer. The Happy Hour will begin at 5:30, and the draft will be held at 6:00. The YLD and the event's sponsor, Flying Paper, will buy drinks for a portion of the event. Anyone interested in signing up for the draft should contact Tim Johnson at 685-2662 or tjohnson@pcplc.com ; Jake Dickerson at 577-8236 or jdickerson@bakerdonelson.com ; or David McKinney at 634-1906 or dmckinney@mcknlaw.com as soon as possible. The Draft on Friday is the absolute last opportunity to sign up as an individual to be placed on a team. League games will begin in early March and end in early May. Games are typically held on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and the league fee is normally around $350. The fee and number of games will vary depending on the number of teams participating.

Networking Night to Benefit Alternative Spring Break

The Public Action Law Society of the University of Memphis School of Law is hosting a Networking Night at Local Gastropub from 5-7 pm on Monday, February 28th. The event offers local attorneys a chance to meet our local law students. Wristbands, which get you free drinks for the duration of the 2-hour event, will be available at the door for between $5 and $7. All proceeds benefit the Alternative Spring Break Project.
     The MBA Access to Justice committee, Association for Women Attorneys, Community Legal Center and Memphis Area Legal Services have teamed up with the law school to host an Alternative Spring Break program, March 7-13, for the students. The effort is led by law student Grace Whiting who chairs the school’s Public Action Law Society. The program offers a 3-track option for the students, offering assistance with family law issues, advance directives and non-profit research.

YLD Annual Meeting Posters Still Available

Posters from the 2010 Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting & Elections held at Alfred's on Beale on November 18th are still available for $20. The signed posters feature artwork by Memphis artist David Lynch (www.davidlynchart.com) and proceeds will help offset the costs of the annual event. American Mock Trial Association National Championship, March 25-27

This year Memphis has been selected to host the Opening Rounds of the American Mock Trial Association’s National Championship Tournament. The tournament will be held Friday, March 25th, Saturday, March 26th, and Sunday, March 27th in the Shelby County Courthouse.

The 2011 Bench Bar Conference will be here in a little over 3 months from now! By popular demand, the conference is returning to Tops’l Beach Resort. You can make your hotel reservation now by calling 800.380.4808 and using the reservation code X 1012. Rates begin at $106/night for a Summit studio and go up to $385 for a Tides 3-bedroom condo. All condos have a fully stocked kitchen and a private bathroom for each bedroom. There will be a sign-up list for those wishing to share a condo to reduce expenses.
     The Conference will again offer a full year’s worth of CLE credit – 15 hours including 3 hours of ethics credit. There will be “tracks” for bankruptcy attorneys, family law practitioners, trial attorneys, and transactional attorneys – everything from recognizing intellectual property issues to handling difficult discovery issues! Historian James H. Jones, who wrote the definitive book on the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment, will be on hand to discuss how good people end up doing bad things. In addition, there will be ample rest and relaxation time on the beach or the golf course for you and your family. Watch for the brochure in mid-February and make plans now to attend!
