Law Week A Great Success!

Law Week 2012 events came to a close yesterday with the Annual Memorial Service at Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Memphis. Chief Judge David Kennedy of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court addressed the large crowd at the annual service which honors attorneys and judges who died this past year.      On Friday, April 27th, the entire legal community came together for the fifth year in a row for the Law Week Launch Party in Court Square. The party was another grand success with hundreds of members of the legal community coming out to enjoy bar-b-q, live music and fun. Thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors and co-hosts. Judge Stotts’ Portrait Unveiling Set for May 4

A ceremony to unveil a portrait of Judge Rita Stotts will be held on Friday, May 4 at 2 p.m. in the south hallway of the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave.  A reception will follow the ceremony.  Judge Stotts was Judge of Circuit Court, Division IV, from May 2000 until her death in January 2009.  All members of the legal community are invited to attend the ceremony and reception to honor Judge Stotts.

Memorial for Professor Francis Gabor, May 24

The Cecil C. Humphreys Law School will honor Professor Gabor’s many contributions to the law school and the greater legal community at a memorial service on Thursday, May 24, 2012, with remarks beginning at 5 p.m. at the law school in downtown Memphis. The Memphis Law School extends an invitation to the entire community to join Professor Gabor’s family and his many friends to remember his life and achievements.
      Professor Gabor was a Holocaust survivor who came from his native Budapest to the United States in 1968. In addition to receiving his first law degree in Budapest, he received an LL.M. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and a J.D. degree from Tulane.Professor Gabor joined the law school faculty in 1976. 
     A fund has been established in Francis’ memory at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. AWA Golf Tournament, June 1

The Association of Women Attorneys will host its first annual golf tournament fund raiser on Friday, June 1st at Mirimichi Championship Course in Millington, TN. There will be a shotgun start at 1 pm. In addition to or instead of swinging the sticks, please come out and join an environmental tour of the Nation’s First Audubon Classic Sanctuary Certified Golf Course, led by Mirimichi staff . The AWA welcomes all comers to “The Place of Happy Retreat." Comments on “Plain Language” General Sessions Forms Due June 11

The Tennessee Supreme Court is seeking comments on the following forms originally proposed by the Tennessee General Sessions Conference and reviewed by the Access to Justice Commission. If adopted by the Court, the forms would be “universally acceptable and legally sufficient for use in civil cases before the General Sessions Courts in Tennessee.” The forms are: (1) Protected Income and Assets (Affidavit of Claim Exemptions);(2) Request to Make Payments (Motion and Affidavit for Installment Payments);(3) Request Not to Pay Fees for Appeal (Pauper's Oath in Lieu of Appeal Bond); (4) Request to Postpone Filing Fees and Order (Uniform Civil Affidavit of Indigency);(5) Request to Protect Income and Assets (Motion to Quash Garnishment/Execution and Claim Exemption Rights); and(6) Sworn Denial (Sworn Denial on Account). The deadline for comments is June 11. Learn by Doing at the Trial Academy, October 19-21

The MBA’s Litigation Section is sponsoring The Trial Academy from Oct. 19-21 (during Judicial Conference) at the Shelby County Courthouse. The Academy is a “learn by doing” seminar designed to hone the trial skills of young attorneys. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance, for which they will have to prepare, just as for an actual trial. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
