YLD Phone-A-Thon for MALS, December 5

A Message from YLD Community Service Chairs Nicole Grida & Jonathan Nelson

The MBA Young Lawyers Division would like to thank those volunteers who assisted with the Memphis Area Legal Services Phone-A-Thon back on September 20, 2012. Due in part to the assistance of our YLD volunteers and others who made phone calls that day, a total of $5,300.00 in pledges were received following over 1,000 phone calls made. Let's be sure this Second Phone-A-Thon is an even bigger success!
The YLD is again calling on all its members to assist with a second Phone-A-Thon for MALS. This time, we will focus on calling young lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding areas. Volunteers are needed between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Wednesday December 5, 2012. The Phone-A-Thon will take place at MALS' Office (109 North Main Street #200).
The MALS fundraising theme this year is "We're All In!" which signifies its mission of ensuring that all members of the local legal community support their capital campaign. So please join the YLD Board in continuing to show MALS that we are truly a part of their cause by giving a moment of your time to make some phone alls. If you are able to volunteer your time, please contact Nicole Grida, Young Lawyers Chair for the Memphis Area Legal Services 2012 Campaign for Equal Justice and YLD Public Service Committee Co-Chair at nicole.grida@leitnerfirm.com or 901.527.0214.

U of M Law Review's Annual Symposium, March 22

The University of Memphis Law Review’s annual Symposium will be held on March 22, 2013. The full-day event will take a close look at key areas of human trafficking in the court system on both a national and statewide level. Human trafficking is often viewed as a distant, international issue. However, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other forms of human trafficking occur every day right outside our backdoor. Tennessee recently passed some of the strongest anti-trafficking laws in the country, and the passage of this legislation guarantees that the issue will arise with increasing frequency in our state courts. For more information, contact Memphis Law Review Symposium Editor Jessica Bradley at jbrdley1@memphis.edu.

Trial Academy Rescheduled for March 2013

The MBA Trial Academy, sponsored by the MBA Litigation Section, will be held March 13-15, 2013, at the Shelby County Courthouse. The Academy is a “learn by doing” seminar designed to hone the trial skills of young attorneys. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance, for which they will have to prepare, just as for an actual trial. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
The registration fee is $750, a bargain when compared to similar programs. For more information or to sign up to receive further details closer to time, contact Lesia Beach at lbeach@memphisbar.org.
