First Happy Hour of the New Year - January 24!

The MBA Young Lawyers Division will host its first Happy Hour of 2013 on Thursday, January 24th at Local Gastropub downtown (95 South Main St.) from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. High School Mock Trial Students Need Your Support - Sign Up To Judge One or More Rounds of the Local Competition!

The MBA Young Lawyers Division is once again sponsoring the 2013 Memphis and Shelby County High School Mock Trial Competition next month. We are still looking for attorneys and judges to volunteer to judge rounds of the Competition on February 11-13, 18, and 19. Rounds will be held at the Shelby County Courthouse at 140 Adams Avenue in downtown Memphis beginning at 5:30pm each night of the Competition. This year's problem involves a criminal case where the State has accused an auto mechanic of intentionally loosening the connections on a vehicle belonging to his investment broker who had lost the defendant's company's pension knowing that the vehicle would fail to function and ultimately crash. If you are interested in assisting with the competition or would like more information, please contact Nicole Grida at nicole.grida@leitnerfirm.com or Jonathan Nelson at jenelson@bassberry.com.

The MBA Litigation Section's Trial Academy, March 13-15

A 3-day "learn by doing" seminar designed to hone the trial skills of attorneys.

With the increasing disappearance of civil trials, it is harder than ever for attorneys to get “real life” trial experience, so how are they to hone their trial skills without going to court? The answer is the Trial Academy, where attorneys can practice trial skills— voir dire, opening statements, direct/cross examination, examination of experts and closing arguments— under the tutelage of some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance and will have to prepare for it, just as they would for an actual trial. At the Trial Academy, the participants will hear presentations from faculty members and then conduct trial exercises while being videotaped. They will receive constructive critique of their performance from experienced trial attorneys. A DVD of their trial exercises will be provided to them for their future reference.
This is an invaluable and cost-effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling. Think about it: Do you want an attorney in your office to handle a trial involving your best client – with no experience? Included with the seminar materials will be a DVD of the Voir Dire, Opening & Closing Statements from a real medical malpractice trial held in Memphis.
The academy will be held March 13-15, 2013, at the Shelby County Courthouse. It offers 15 hours total CLE credit - 2.0 Dual / 13.0 General and is sponsored by the MBA Litigation Section. For more information and to register today, click here.

U of M Law Review's Annual Symposium, March 22

The University of Memphis Law Review’s annual Symposium will be held on March 22, 2013. The full-day event will take a close look at key areas of human trafficking in the court system on both a national and statewide level. Human trafficking is often viewed as a distant, international issue. However, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other forms of human trafficking occur every day right outside our backdoor. Tennessee recently passed some of the strongest anti-trafficking laws in the country, and the passage of this legislation guarantees that the issue will arise with increasing frequency in our state courts. For more information, contact Memphis Law Review Symposium Editor Jessica Bradley at jbrdley1@memphis.edu.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Barbara Pohlmann, 901-624-0309 or pohlmannb@rhodes.edu, or Marcus Pohlmann, 901-843-3843 or pohlmann@rhodes.edu.
