Justice Holder Announces Retirement
Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Janice M. Holder announced Wednesday she will retire from the court at the end of her term Aug. 31, 2014. Holder, 63, was the third woman to serve on the state’s high court and was the first woman to serve as the court’s chief justice, from 2008 to 2010. She was elected Circuit Court judge in Shelby County in 1990, where she served until then-governor Don Sundquist appointed her to a vacancy on the Supreme Court in December 1996. She won a statewide retention election in August 1998 and was re-elected in 2006 to her current eight-year term.
“It has been my privilege to serve the people of Tennessee as a trial judge and Supreme Court justice — and an honor to have been selected by my fellow justices as the first female chief justice in our state’s history,” she said.

Veteran’s Legal Clinic Volunteers Needed!
A clinic to assist veterans with legal questions and issues is held from noon until 2 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the VA offices located on the 11th floor of 1407 Union Ave. The word has now spread among the veterans about this clinic, and 35 clients came to the June clinic! We need more volunteers to help staff this clinic on a monthly basis; you can come for one or both hours and you do not have to be certified by the VA to provide assistance. Most of the issues involve family law (child support/visitation), employment, criminal (driver’s license reinstatement, court costs, expungement), and debt collection. Don’t worry if you do not have expertise in these areas! The training session for volunteers held in April is now available online (click here); it covers child support, debt collection, and expungement. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Anne Fritz at firstname.lastname@example.org.
