Volunteers Needed for Project Homeless Connect on Aug. 22

Project Homeless Connect brings together a large variety of resources and services in one place to help people struggling with homelessness. Dozens of nonprofit agencies, service providers and other organizations join together to break down the barriers that can make it more difficult to escape homelessness. As part of those services, a “street clinic”, sponsored by the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office, will be offered to help those with unpaid court costs and fines. In addition, a civil legal clinic will be held to assist people with issues such as child support, collections, and landlord/tenant. The next Project Homeless Connect will be held on Aug. 22 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. Attorneys are needed to assist with the civil legal clinic for a 2-hour shift. We particularly need attorneys familiar with family law issues. If you can help, please contact Anne Fritz at 527.3575 or afritz@memphisbar.org.

Tip of the Week (Courtesy of Ben Sissman)

Ben recently discovered that if you have a e-filing login and password for the Circuit and Chancery Courts, you can print any scanned document in a case, thus saving the time and expense of having to go to the Courthouse. (See what you can learn if you volunteer at a Saturday Legal Clinic?)

Please Complete Online Mentoring Survey

The Memphis Bar Association and the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law are partnering to create a mentoring program for law students. An online survey was sent to MBA members to gauge their interest in participating in this program either by mentoring a law student, conducting a mock interview, providing “shadowing” opportunities or speaking on a workshop panel. The survey will take less than a minute to complete; please respond when the follow-up email is sent. We want your input!

Veteran’s Legal Clinic Volunteers Needed!

A clinic to assist veterans with legal questions and issues is held from noon until 2 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the VA offices located on the 11th floor of 1407 Union Ave. The word has now spread among the veterans about this clinic, and 35 clients came to the June clinic! We need more volunteers to help staff this clinic on a monthly basis; you can come for one or both hours and you do not have to be certified by the VA to provide assistance. Most of the issues involve family law (child support/visitation), employment, criminal (driver’s license reinstatement, court costs, expungement), and debt collection. Don’t worry if you do not have expertise in these areas! The training session for volunteers held in April is now available online (click here); it covers child support, debt collection, and expungement. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Anne Fritz at afritz@memphisbar.org.

Qualified candidates should hold a bachelor's degree preferably in journalism or public relations or with 5+ years experience in these fields and have extensive knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; working knowledge of HTML code and extensive experience with web editing; and excellent writing and editing skills, publishing experience preferred.
