Volunteers Needed for Wills for Heroes this Saturday!

The Wills for Heroes clinic will be held this Saturday, October 12th as part of Celebrate Pro Bono month. Currently, we have over 140 heroes signed up to participate, but are short on volunteers (especially attorneys). The WFH event will be held at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library from 8:00-5:00. We still need volunteers for the morning shift from 8:30-12:30 and the afternoon shift from 12:30-4:30. A short training session will be held before each session.

NO EXPERIENCE drafting wills is necessary! You’ll learn everything you need to know during the training session. We’d love to see as many volunteers as we can. If you are interested or have more questions, please contact Joann Coston-Holloway at 577.8223 or jholloway@bakerdonelson.com. Wills for Heroes provides a wonderful and necessary service to all of our first responders and they are very appreciative.

Also, the regular Saturday Legal Clinic will be held at the Central Library from 10 a.m. to noon. The clinic provides legal advice to members of the public; if you’re interested in volunteering, contact Anne Fritz at 527.3575 or afritz@memphisbar.org. From noon to 2:00 p.m., the law school’s Student Bar Association will host a pro bono picnic and celebration at the park next to the library. Bring your family and come participate and celebrate in these events!

Memphis Bar Foundation Luncheon Recap

On Tues., Oct. 8, the Memphis Bar Foundation hosted its Fellows Luncheon at the Peabody. At the event, Chris Martin, a recent graduate of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, received the Irvin Bogatin Social Justice Award in recognition of his 300 hours of pro bono work during law school, and Jennifer Sneed received the Irvin Bogatin Scholarship. Both the award and scholarship are sponsored by the Bogatin Fund, created by the family and friends of the late Irvin Bogatin to honor his legacy of pursuing social justice.

In addition, $35,000 in grants were awarded to 10 non-profit organizations for law-related programs or projects and 37 new Fellows were inducted into the Foundation. Attorneys and judges are selected as Fellows in recognition of their service to the legal profession and the community, and their adherence to the highest standards of professional conduct. Peter Letsou, Dean of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, spoke about the challenges facing law schools and how he believes “Memphis Law” is advantageously situated to capitalize on those challenges.  He also kept mentioning the beautiful law school building!

Email Scam Targets IOLTA Accounts

The Tennessee Bar Foundation reports that an email scam is popping up across the country warning lawyers that their IOLTA account has “insufficient funds” to pay an outstanding check. Barri Bernstein, executive director of the foundation – which administers the IOLTA program in Tennessee – said today that the sender claims to be National Bankruptcy Services LLC of Dallas. While several different names are used to sign the email, all versions refer to a check of approximately $19,000. Anyone who receives such an email should not open it or click on the attachment, which is presumed to contain malware.
