Don’t Wait to Get Your Ethics Hours!

Want to get your ethics hours taken care of before the mad scramble in December? The MBA is offering two upcoming seminars (each for 1.5 hours of dual credit) that will take care of your ethics requirement for 2013. The first is “Recent Ethical Updates from the BPR” with Sandy Garrett, Chief Disciplinary Counsel for the Board of Professional Responsibility next Wed. Oct. 23 from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the MBA. Cost is $45 for MBA members who register by Monday, Oct. 21; after that the fee increases to $55. The second seminar is “New Rule 9: A Guided Tour of Tennessee’s  Disciplinary Procedure for 2014 and Beyond” with Brian Faughnan, Thomason Hendrix Harvey Johnson & Mitchell, and chair of the TBA’s Committee on Ethics Professional Responsibility. It is scheduled for Tues., Nov. 19 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the MBA. Both Sandy and Brian are highly rated speakers, and are sure to keep your attention! ESQ. Build Incubator for Sole Attorneys begins Oct. 23

ESQ. Build, a new program to train young lawyers setting up their own practice, kicks off with a CLE session next Wed. Oct. 23 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Reading Room (4th floor) of the law school. The topic is “Getting Started” and features the following topics and speakers: Dennis Schroeder from the Service Corps of Retired Executives on how to create a business plan; Jimmy Dickey and Susan Lattimore from The Marston Group on selecting the choice of entity for your practice; and Denise Craig and Pam McGrath from IPSCO on insurance. All sole practitioners are invited to attend the seminar, which has been submitted for two hours of general CLE credit. The registration fee is $30 for attorneys who have been practicing less than 5 years and $50 for attorneys who have been practicing more than 5 years. Federalist Society Debate on Judicial Selection Oct. 18

The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will host a debate between John L. Ryder of Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh and Gary K. Smith of Apperson Crump on the merits of a constitutional amendment to change Tennessee’s method of judicial selection. U.S. District Court Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. will moderate the discussion. The event will take place Friday, October 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Madison Hotel.
