The State of Tennessee-Division of Workers’ Compensation is requesting interested and qualified attorneys to apply for the position of Workers’ Compensation Judge. One of the judge positions will be designated Chief Judge. Adjudication of workers’ compensation claims involving an illness or injury that occurred on or after July 1, 2014, will be heard in the new workers’ compensation court which was established in Public Chapter 289. All interested applicants must complete a questionnaire which may be found on the division’s website by December 1, 2013. The Office of the Federal Defender for the Western District of Tennessee is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Federal Public Defender in Memphis, Tennessee. The Assistant Federal Defender must have a commitment to the representation of indigent persons in addition to excellent writing, legal research, advocacy and communication skills. In addition, experience in federal court and working knowledge of the federal sentencing guidelines and of federal criminal law are also preferred. Fluency in Spanish is desirable. MBA Annual Meeting Next Thursday!

Make plans to attend the Memphis Bar Association's annual meeting next Thursday, December 5, from 11:30 am-1:00 pm at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn, 3700 Central Ave. Join your colleagues as we celebrate the achievements of President Linda Warren Seely and welcome Kirk Caraway as the 2014 MBA President.  Jim Garts will receive the Judge Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award and Stacie Winkler, the Sam A. Myar, Jr. Memorial Award. Our Condolences

Memphis attorney Charles Jeffrey Barnett, 62, passed away on November 21, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7 at Evangel Church, 262 N. Perkins Road, beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Hope Christian Academy in Memphis.

Unveiling of Tennessee Judicial Museum, Dec. 4

The Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society will unveil Phase II of the Tennessee Judiciary Museum on December 4, 2013 and honor Justice Janice M. Holder for her service on the Supreme Court. Justice Antonin Scalia to Speak at Law School and Luncheon on Dec. 16

The Honorable Antonin Scalia, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, will visit the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to speak with law school students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Memphis community on Monday, December 16th. Justice Scalia will speak at a luncheon at the Peabody Hotel from 12:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., with a private program for Memphis Law students at the law school immediately following the luncheon. The Peabody Hotel luncheon is open to the public and tables will be available for $750 per table of ten; individual tickets will also be available for $75.
